Horizontal Drain Boxes represent the latest technology for effective and economical drainage of golf course sand bunkers. The HDB consists of a polyethylene drain box fitted with a screen sandwiched between two removable fiberglass support grates.
This innovative design allows for not only cleaning the screen, but for inspection and flushing of the structure providing a truly serviceable bunker drainage system.
The box is then connected to ADS corrugated polyethylene pipe to move the water away from the bunker into the course's drainage system. HDBs are now in use at more than 400 courses in the United States.
Measuring 12 × 16 × 48 inches, the HDB provides the drainage area of 52 feet of 4-inch perforated pipe and can be readily used in new construction and easily added to existing bunkers. Two fiberglass grates, in conjunction with a silt control mesh, filters silt and clay and easily serviceable.
BUNKER DRAINAGE
All bunker drainage shall have no less than ADS N12 – 4' smooth wall interior non-perforated pipe for exit drainage and extend to lakes, streams, drains or other non-play areas with no less than 0.5% slope. The inside bunker floor shall have no slope less than 0.5% slope in any area and flow to one distinct low area of the bunker. At this low point and all low points in the bunker shall be an ADS HDB (Horizontal Drain Box part #1248DB).
The HDB shall tie into the exit drainage and installed at least 2' below the clay subgrade. Drainage trenches shall extend into the low area of each bunker lobe or finger and DESIGNER may require additional herringbone or smile drains. All trenches must convene and tie into the HDB at the lowest point. The trench shall be 8' in width by at least 8' in depth and the bottom of trench shall produce a constant grade of not less than 0.5% slope. Interior bunker drainage shall have no less than ADS N12 – 4' smooth wall interior perforated pipe.
Washed gravel of ¼' to ?' shall be spread evenly at least 2' of depth on the trench bottom. Pipe shall lie on the gravel blanket and the trench then backfilled with gravel to a depth one-inch shy of the subgrade. HDB shall be backfilled and stabilized using 3 parts sand and 1 part Portland mixture and compacted flush to the top of the grate and the finished subgrade with positive slope towards the drain box. A minimum of 2' below and 6' all around the HDB shall be of this mixture.
