Columbus, Ohio --Using a patented technology developed in the aerospace industry, Advanced Drainage Systems (ADS), the world's largest manufacturer of corrugated high density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe, is adding a new watertight joint to its N-12® product line. With increasing focus on storm water management due to new Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) guidelines, watertight joints will play an essential role in meeting these stricter requirements.

The new watertight joint is designed by fusing a two-inch wide ceramic/polymer composite onto the outside wall of the integral bell of the pipe. This new pipe, N-12 WTTM, meets or exceeds ASTM D3212 lab test and ASTM F1417 watertight field test, providing the highest watertight joint performance for storm water pipe. The ceramic/polymer composite is easily identified, as it matches the distinctive green stripe of ADS N-12 pipe. This is the third watertight joint ADS has engineered for corrugated polyethylene pipe since 1991.

The new design of the joint does not stop with the ceramic/polymer composite. The pipe incorporates a patented omni-directional gasket designed to increase its sealing force as either internal or external pressure (water or soil) increases. ADS engineers also designed a flared bell and a tapered spigot that significantly improves ease of installation for the contractor.

"We engineered this pipe to completely surpass anything the industry could offer to the storm water market," says Tom King, senior vice president of engineering for ADS. "Polyethylene is an outstanding material for pipe as it offers excellent abrasion and corrosion resistance. The ceramic/polymer composite brings exceptionally high strength to the joint. When you add up all of these new design components, we truly have created a third generation of watertight storm water pipe," King concluded.

The technologically advanced N-12 WT pipe will be initially produced at the company’s Washougal, Washington plant. "Demand for watertight joints is highest in this area of the country," said Tony Radoszewski, ADS' director of marketing. "It will ultimately be manufactured in 12"-60" diameters, and be available throughout the country in the coming months."
